Filipino tourist recovering after train accident in Taiwan

A Filipino tourist who was hit by a train while posing for a photo at a popular tourist spot in Taiwan is now out of danger after undergoing major spine surgery. Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) Chairperson Atty. Cheloy Garafil confirmed the tourist is recovering but will require additional treatments and medications.

Garafil shared that the accident occurred at the Shifen Old Street, a well-known site for releasing sky lanterns. The tourist was reportedly posing near the tracks when she was struck by a passing train. “She raised her hand while posing, and unfortunately, she was hit,” Garafil explained, adding that safety protocols are in place but may have been overlooked in the excitement.

The injured tourist, who has requested anonymity, was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. Garafil praised the travel agency that arranged the tour, noting their swift response and attentiveness to the injured tourist’s needs.

The tourist’s husband arrived in Taipei on Thursday morning to be with her. According to Garafil, the tourist is expected to fully recover in about two weeks.
