Filipino student develops cheaper ride-hailing app ‘Tara’

Erwin Dee, a multimedia arts student with a knack for programming, is gearing up to launch a revolutionary car-booking app named “Tara,” promising more affordable rates compared to existing car-booking services.

The inception of Tara was ignited by a wave of nostalgia for the more budget-friendly “Uber days,” which Erwin Dee encountered in a series of TikTok posts back in late December of last year. “For the Gen Zs who don’t know, Uber rides that time were cheap,” Dee noted, reminiscing about the more affordable ride-hailing period that sparked his innovative idea.

“I thought, ‘What if gumawa ako ng ride-hailing app? What if may solution para gawing cheaper ulit ‘yung fare?’” Dee mused, envisioning a platform that could resurrect the economical fares of the past while also being beneficial to the drivers.

Standing distinct from other ride-hailing apps, Tara aspires to be a “beacon of change in the ride-hailing industry,” as described by Dee in a Facebook post. The cornerstone of this change is the app’s policy to hand over 100% of the fares to the drivers, empowering them to be independent while also ensuring a budget-friendly service to the passengers.

A significant highlight of Tara is its adherence to the LTFRB’s standard fare matrix, doing away with the surcharges that often inflate ride costs, thereby promising a more affordable ride experience to its users.
