Filipino-penned tale on future thinking joins 2025 Sharjah book celebration

Filipino author and educator MaryRose Cobarde Candare will present her debut children’s book, What If the Future Comes?, at the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival 2025, which runs from April 23 to May 4 at the Expo Centre Sharjah. Her participation marks a milestone for Filipino representation in regional literature, as her book delves into how young minds make sense of abstract concepts like the future.

The story follows a five-year-old named Rosie who becomes curious about the idea of the future, a word she constantly hears but doesn’t fully understand. As Rosie pieces together its meaning with the help of her parents, the book encourages readers to explore the idea that the future unfolds gradually in everyday moments. “The message of the book for kids (and even grownups) is quite simple—we meet the future one day at a time so let us try to live each day creating our best future,” Candare shared with TGFM.

Reflecting on her inclusion in the festival, Candare said, “As a first-time children’s book author, being part of the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival is a delightful experience as it is an event specifically for kids who I would love to reach. As a Filipino expatriate, seeing my work published in the Middle East offers an opportunity to share the Filipino talent and creativity.” She added, “This moment is not just a personal milestone—it’s a celebration of our shared love for storytelling. I can’t wait for my book to reach the Filipino community of young readers.”

Organized by the Sharjah Book Authority, the festival is a major cultural event that promotes reading and learning among children and families through workshops, author sessions, exhibitions, and creative showcases. Entry is free, and events are held daily from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
