Macario Jr Dela Cruz, a 32-year-old Filipino beverage manager at the prestigious Ritz Carlton Hotel Riyadh, is making waves in the world of mixology with his unique approach and unwavering passion for his craft. With a career spanning 12 years, Macario has become a prominent figure in the industry, garnering accolades and recognition for his talent and dedication.

Macario’s journey began as a barback in Dubai back in 2014, where he quickly demonstrated his flair for mixology and bartending. Over the years, he participated in numerous cocktail competitions, earning various placements and even winning the coveted Fernet Branca coin design competition. His exceptional skills and creativity led him to become the first-ever Monin Cup Grand Champion in Saudi Arabia in 2019, solidifying his position as a master mixologist.

“I am a Mixologist by heart,” Macario proudly declares.

“Mixology for me is some sort of calling, it helped me overcome unnecessary behaviors of myself, it taught me how to be firm and be creative not only in mixing cocktails but in every aspect of my life.”

Macario’s passion and talent have not gone unnoticed, as he was recently awarded the Best Bartender title during Saudi Arabia’s Hotel Show. His expertise in mixology has also earned him a spot in the prestigious top 50 Bartender Powerlists by Caterer Middle East. His unique style and signature drinks have become the face of the Ritz Carlton Riyadh, where he aims to create impeccable masterpieces using both local and international ingredients.

Reflecting on his career, Macario emphasizes the importance of pursuing one’s passions and finding fulfillment in their chosen field.

“Choosing this career is not just a decision to make, I was born to do it,” he asserts.

“We should also have the passion to love what we are doing and be excellent in it, as it will become our trademark in the years to come.”

Beyond his work, Macario is a content creator and shares his passion for mixology with his nearly 12 thousand followers on Instagram. He showcases his expertise by sharing videos online and also indulges in digital art during his free time.

Despite the everyday challenges of the industry, Macario remains resilient. He views these challenges as opportunities for growth and self-improvement.

“We need that for us to be challenged in everyday life,” he states.

“As for me, I don’t call it a struggle but instead an opportunity to be more effective in my profession and to be a better version of myself.”

Macario’s journey has not been without personal struggles. Working away from home, he missed important celebrations and even experienced the heartbreaking loss of his 13-day-old baby. However, his positive outlook and unwavering belief in himself and a higher power have helped him overcome these trials.

“Believing in myself in a positive way helped me a lot, helped me to stand and continue that everything happened for a reason,” he shares.

Looking ahead, Macario envisions putting up his own bar and training center in the Philippines, where he can inspire and guide aspiring bartenders and mixologists.

“I want to be someone’s back when they feel discouraged because, trust me, I was alone when I was experiencing that and wished that someone would push me to achieve my goals,” he expresses.

To his fellow kabayans who may be struggling, Macario offers words of encouragement and advice: “Never stop! We need to showcase our Filipino blood where we stand and fight against whatever challenge that may come. As long as you are not doing anything wrong, be proud, and your sacrifices will soon be rewarded.”
