Filipino students proved their world-class talent in mathematics after winning multiple awards at the 2025 Vietnam International Mathematics Competition (VIMC) held in Da Nang City from August 14 to 19.
According to a report by the Manila Bulletin, the Philippine delegation bagged seven individual medals, nine Merit citations, and several team awards, including the prestigious Champion Team title. The contest gathered 553 math-gifted participants from 30 countries, among them the United States, China, Russia, India, Singapore, and the host nation Vietnam.
Leading the Philippine winners were silver medalists Annette Tiffany Yu and Robert Henrik Uy of St. John’s Institute, and Shaun Lawrence Poh Leung of St. Stephen’s High School. Bronze medals went to Heal Job Esio (Pangasinan Universal Institute), Jacob Trevor Kaw (Better Together Homeschool Int’l.), Kate Dominique Siaco (Ateneo de Manila Senior High), and Adrienne Geraldine Co (Immaculate Conception Academy).
Nine other young mathletes also earned Merit awards, including representatives from St. Jude Catholic School, Philippine Science High School, Immaculate Conception Academy, and other top institutions.
In the group contest, both Philippine Teams A and B emerged as Champion Teams, while three other squads took first runner-up spots and one placed second runner-up, all bringing home trophies and medals.
The competition, hosted by the Vietnam-Korea University of Information and Communications Technology, is recognized for not only challenging math skills but also fostering cultural exchange among participants.
The Philippine team was guided by Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG) leaders Dr. Simon Chua, Isidro Aguilar, Arvie Ubarro, and Minerva Bianca Avecilla. The delegation returned to Manila on Tuesday, August 19.
Last year, another Filipino team also excelled in Vietnam, securing 22 medals at the Global Math Competition.
