Filipino marketing specialist thrives in Dubai, balancing corporate role and vlogging

The journey of building a successful career abroad is often filled with challenges and triumphs. For many, the path to achieving professional and personal goals requires dedication, resilience, and a passion for growth. This is exemplified by the story of Mark John Ilano, a 31-year-old Marketing Specialist currently thriving in the UAE.

Mark’s professional journey is a blend of strategic marketing expertise and a passion for urban lifestyle content creation. Working at Zone Power Tech Co., he is responsible for developing and executing marketing strategies, promoting products and services, and driving sales. His role involves extensive market research to identify target audiences, analyze consumer behavior, and evaluate competitors. Mark also manages marketing campaigns across various channels, including digital, social media, print, and events.

In addition to his role as a Marketing Specialist, Mark is a licensed urban lifestyle content creator based in Dubai. For over five years, he has been vlogging to provide information, insights, and practical solutions for modern urban living. His content spans fashion, beauty, travel, and luxury products, engaging his audience with the latest trends and events. Collaborating with brands, he aims to raise awareness and offer firsthand experiences to his followers.

His professional journey began in 2018 as a customer service representative handling VIP kids in the entertainment sector, where he hosted school trips, birthday parties, and operated large rides. He then transitioned to a role at CAFU, managing inbound and outbound calls before taking charge of the company’s social media platforms. After two years at CAFU, he pursued his current position, leveraging his passion for social media to enhance his professional endeavors.

The decision to work abroad stemmed from a desire to explore new opportunities. After graduating from college, Mark initially worked as a Front Office Agent in a hotel without a specific plan.

“I wanted to gain experience before pursuing a career as a Cabin Crew member,” he shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

“However, during my six months at the company, a colleague applied for an international position, sparking my curiosity. I applied online, and to my surprise, I received a phone call inviting me for an interview in the UAE. Taking a chance, I went for the interview and was fortunate enough to be offered the job. This experience made me realize that pursuing opportunities abroad could lead to a promising career path.”

Balancing work and studies as a BPO representative in the Philippines, Mark’s journey has been one of resilience and determination.

“The experience sharpened my knowledge, skills, and attitude, preparing me for new challenges and opportunities in the UAE,” he says.

Transitioning from a call center agent to customer service in retail, Mark faced the physical demands of the job and the emotional challenge of being away from his family. However, these experiences strengthened his resolve to save and provide for his loved ones.

Mark finds immense satisfaction in his current role as a Marketing Specialist.

“I genuinely enjoy my work,” he shares.

“With a strong understanding of social media, I have the opportunity to collaborate with other brands and create content for my platform. Exploring new places in Dubai and sharing updates with my followers brings me great joy. The most rewarding aspect is the appreciation and support from my audience for the brands I represent. In addition to financial compensation, I find fulfillment in the creative process and the enjoyment that comes from my work.”

Working overseas has opened numerous doors for Mark, particularly in vlogging.

“Interacting with individuals from diverse cultures and acquiring new knowledge has enhanced my public speaking skills and cultivated resilience in facing various challenges,” he says.

Despite the opportunities, managing finances has been a challenge.

“One common struggle among overseas Filipino workers is managing a limited salary to cover expenses while also sending money to loved ones back home,” Mark explains.

“I meticulously calculate all expenses, allocate my salary accordingly, prioritize essential purchases, and communicate openly with my family about my financial situation. Additionally, I engage in part-time work to supplement my income and maintain financial stability.”

Looking to the future, Mark hopes to return to the Philippines to expand his business ventures.

“If given the opportunity to become a successful entrepreneur, I would return to my home country to concentrate on expanding my business and be closer to my family,” he says.

For those struggling abroad, Mark offers this advice: “It is crucial to have a safety net for unforeseen circumstances. Seek companionship from friends or flatmates to alleviate stress. Above all, exercise caution and discretion when sharing personal information. Staying connected with family back home can provide a sense of comfort and support during challenging times.”
