Filipino man linked to scam hub arrested while trying to leave PH

A Filipino man connected to scam hub operations was sentenced after being caught at the airport earlier this year for attempting to leave the Philippines using a fake immigration stamp.

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) confirmed that the Pasay City Metropolitan Trial Court Branch 44 found the accused, identified only as “Klein,” guilty of violating Article 172 of the Revised Penal Code for the use of falsified documents. In its October 21, 2025 ruling, Presiding Judge Kirk M. Aniñon ordered a two-month jail term and a ₱1,000 fine, with subsidiary imprisonment if unpaid.

The case stemmed from an incident on January 17, 2025, when BI officers intercepted Klein as he was about to depart for Bangkok, Thailand. Authorities discovered that his passport carried a counterfeit departure stamp. Upon questioning, he admitted that he had been recruited to work for a call center abroad—one that investigators later linked to a scam hub operation.

BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado welcomed the conviction, noting that it underscores the government’s firm position against falsified travel records.

“While some individuals may claim to be victims of recruitment schemes, those who knowingly falsify or use fake immigration stamps will still face penalties under the law,” Viado said. “The Bureau remains firm in its stance that document fraud will not be tolerated, as it undermines our efforts to protect legitimate travelers and combat human trafficking.”

The BI reiterated its warning to Filipinos seeking overseas employment to avoid illegal recruiters and suspicious online job offers, emphasizing that legitimate work opportunities abroad must go through proper government channels.
