A team of Filipino professionals has developed virtual reality (VR) games designed to assist in the rehabilitation of adults with dementia and children with cerebral palsy.
The project, called “AXEL Virtual Care: Alagang Pinoy sa Makabagong Panahon,” was created by healthcare professionals, computer scientists, and game designers from the University of the Philippines Manila and UP Diliman. According to a GMA News report, it features two main games: “Mission to Planet Axel” for children with cerebral palsy and “Suroy-suroy” for dementia patients.
“Mission to Planet Axel” aims to improve mobility, strength, and balance in children with cerebral palsy, a neurological condition that affects movement and posture. Meanwhile, “Suroy-suroy” is designed to help manage cognitive and psychological symptoms in adults with dementia, such as memory loss, confusion, and anxiety.
According to UP Manila’s Information, Publication, and Public Affairs Office, both games incorporate culturally relevant Filipino themes and have been described by early users as engaging, meaningful, and relaxing.
