In 1992, Winonah Bicodo embarked on a journey from the Philippines to Dubai, starting as a waitress at the Dubai Marine Hotel and Beach Club Resort. Today, she stands as a Senior Credit Analyst at Mashreq Bank.
Her journey is marked by a significant transition, from humble beginnings to a prestigious position in the financial world.
Bicodo reflects on her career highlight: “The highlight of my career is when I was working as customer service in Mashreq Bank. I enjoyed meeting different people from different backgrounds, which taught me how to develop my communication skills, leading me to the position I am in today.”
Embracing challenges for a better tomorrow
Winonah’s mantra, “My challenges made me a better me,” perfectly encapsulates her journey. Choosing to work abroad wasn’t just a career move; it was a pursuit for a better life.
“Life in the Philippines was hard,” she admits with The Global Filipino Magazine.
Her decision to move to Dubai was driven by the desire for better job opportunities to support her family back home.
Her career path is diverse, from being a waitress to a sales lady in various companies across Dubai’s malls. Each role played a critical part in shaping her professional life.
Today, she relishes her role as a Senior Credit Analyst, where she evaluates banks’ eligibility for loans based on country and bank ratings.
“I enjoy analyzing how different banks work depending on the countries,” she says, reflecting her passion for her field.
Winonah’s journey wasn’t without its struggles. Adapting to cultural changes in Dubai, raising her son as a single mother, and striving for a better life were significant challenges.
“As a mother, my son was the reason I made it this far in our lives,” she shares.
Her faith and perseverance played a crucial role in overcoming these obstacles.
Future aspirations and advice to fellow Filipinos
Looking ahead, Winonah aims to continue inspiring and supporting those around her while enjoying life with family and friends.
Her advice to fellow overseas Filipino workers is poignant: “Continue working, don’t stop dreaming, work hard, make a plan, focus and never give up, doesn’t matter what struggle comes in your way.”
Her journey is not just a personal success story; it’s an inspiration to many.
“Be good, Be kind, and Keep shining,” Winonah concludes, leaving a message that resonates with every Filipino striving for a better life abroad.
