Exemplifying resilience and innovation, Rhea Mae Nico has built an extensive career over 17 years in the UAE, alongside a successful business in the Philippines. Her evolution from a healthcare professional to a business magnate is truly inspiring.
“My journey began in 2006 when I followed my family to the UAE,” Rhea Mae recounts.
“My father had worked in the Middle East for nearly three decades, and his experiences influenced my decision to explore opportunities here.”
Rhea Mae first dipped her toes into the professional world at Al Ain Hospital as a Health Information Management officer. It was a pioneering step, coinciding with the modernization phase of the medical coding and billing system in the UAE. Her initial stint opened up a gateway to growth in the healthcare sector, prompting her to pursue a certification in Medical Coding from the USA—an effort that took 18 months of rigorous study but eventually paid off.
Today, Rhea Mae holds a dual role as a US Certified Medical Coder at Via Medica International Healthcare and the CEO of her own company, Radiance Skincare Emporium Inc. Her work at Via Medica involves intricate coding which is pivotal in the healthcare system, while her business venture focuses on promoting wellness and entrepreneurship.
“I’m passionate about empowering OFWs and others through entrepreneurship,” Rhea Mae tells The Global Filipino Magazine. Her company offers health and wellness products, including Glow Smoothies and Coffeeholics, and supports over 200 resellers and distributors worldwide.
Radiance Skincare Emporium isn’t just a business; it’s a platform for change. Through initiatives like the “OFW Heroes” program, the company awards business packages to deserving individuals, promoting self-reliance among OFWs. This dedication to empowering others led to Rhea Mae being honored as a “Remarkable Woman of Dedication & Inspiring Business Leader” by the prestigious Maharlikang Filipino Award in June 2023.
Reflecting on her time in the UAE, Rhea Mae appreciates the diverse learning environment and the high standard of living.
“The UAE’s infrastructure significantly cuts down commuting times, and the tax-free regime coupled with excellent healthcare makes it an ideal place for professionals to thrive,” she explains.
However, the path wasn’t always smooth. In 2016, Rhea Mae faced numerous challenges, including job loss, financial burdens, and personal betrayals.
“Those times taught me the importance of resilience and the value of having a few, trustworthy people by your side,” she recalls.
Looking ahead, Rhea Mae has no plans to slow down. Her focus is set on expanding her healthcare and wellness business, developing new products, and helping more people achieve their financial and health goals.
“Running my business full-time and expanding our reach is what I am passionately working towards,” she asserts.
For OFWs struggling abroad, Rhea Mae offers sage advice: live below your means and avoid unnecessary debt.
“Focus on building a solid financial foundation and invest in your professional growth,” she advises. Rhea Mae emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and mastery in one’s field, which can lead to better job opportunities and security.
“Remember, survival abroad can bring out both the best and worst in people. Be kind, be cautious, and never take advantage of others. We only have one life, so give it your all,” Rhea Mae concludes, embodying her life mantra that emphasizes perseverance regardless of time, as the time will pass anyway.
