A devoted educator from the Philippines has been named one of the top 50 finalists for the 2024 Global Teacher Prize. Selected from over 5,000 nominations across 89 countries, Jorta’s transformative work with the Matigsalug indigenous community in Bukidnon has earned him international recognition.
Since 2015, Junmerth T. Jorta has been the driving force behind Keupiyanan Te Balugo, a “Last Mile School” situated in the remote village of Sitio Balugo, Barangay Kalagangan, San Fernando. The challenges he faces include a three-hour weekly journey and crossing 17 rivers to reach the school, demonstrating his relentless dedication to education.
Jorta has implemented various programs to address the unique needs of the Matigsalug children. The “Balugo Pagkaon Sakto” initiative provides free daily lunches, combating student hunger and boosting attendance. He also launched the “Basa Balugo” program to improve literacy by using culturally relevant teaching materials.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jorta ensured uninterrupted learning through innovative radio-based lessons and home visits. Beyond academics, he has addressed social issues like early marriages and has inspired girls in the community to continue their education.
His initiatives have transformed the school into a hub of opportunity and empowerment. Efforts such as the “OK sa Balugo” program have brought infrastructure improvements, fostering a more conducive learning environment.
Jorta’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. He was one of the 10 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos in 2022 and now stands as a testament to the power of education in breaking the cycle of poverty.
The Global Teacher Prize, organized by the Varkey Foundation in partnership with UNESCO, aims to celebrate exceptional educators who make a difference in their communities. The winner of the $1 million prize will be announced later this year.
