For some parents, their children’s first words or baby steps are considered significant milestones. But for UAE-based couple Mary Grace V. Estigoy, a Senior Admin, and her husband Russel C. Estigoy, a Head Chef, their son’s early display of an extraordinary gift for memory retention took them by surprise.
Recalling the early signs of Julian’s remarkable abilities, Mary Grace told The Global Filipino Magazine, “As a first-time mom, I always looked forward to his milestones. Until one night, when he was on his crib and started reciting the Alphabets and Numbers at just 14 months.”
She took out his flash cards and was astonished when Julian could identify them all correctly.
“That moment, I was thinking could he have special skills?”
This wasn’t a one-off event. Julian’s talent further shone when he began identifying the flags of various countries and their capitals merely by watching television.
“When he learned the country flags and capital cities of the world, that’s when I believed God has given him a gift,” Mary Grace exclaimed.
Despite Julian’s unique gifts, the Estigoys firmly believe in a well-rounded childhood. Concerned about his development, they sought guidance from his pediatrician. Although it was deemed too early to test his IQ, they enrolled him in an online class to foster interactions with peers.
Mary Grace mentions, “We see to it that he goes out during our day-off because we believe it’s important for kids to have social interaction.”
Now enrolled in a nursery, Julian thrives in his new environment, bonding well with teachers and classmates.
Mary Grace proudly shares, “Despite our busy schedules as working parents, it is our top priority to give him our time.”
The bond the family shares is evident. Julian’s parents ensure quality time with their son every night.
“We would have a Q&A as his playtime and he likes it. So I guess, giving him time is more than enough,” says Mary Grace.
“He is a smart kid, and we as parents learn a lot from him as well.”
Julian’s talents don’t stop at memory retention. By age two, he was already reading and showcasing an avid interest in books. A lover of music, Julian’s ability to name every musical instrument he encounters speaks volumes of his prodigious talents.
Mary Grace fondly recalls his first song, “Can’t Help Falling in Love”, and mentions his love for Lego, puzzles, and studying world maps.
“He loves flags so much. He loves to play and study the world map. He loves music and was able to name every musical instrument he encounters. He is really a wonderful kid at his age,” Mary Grace gushes.
When asked about their aspirations for Julian, Mary Grace admits, “It’s too early to tell by now, but we always pray to God for him to be healthy ‘always’ so he can be whatever he wants to be when he grows up. That’s what every parent would always pray for.”
