Renowned Filipino chef Reggie Aspiras was recognized by the Japanese Embassy for her contributions to cultural exchanges between the Philippines and Japan through culinary arts. The outgoing Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines, Kazuhiko Koshikawa, awarded Aspiras with the “Ambassador’s Commendation” at his residence in Makati City. The ceremony took place over the weekend, highlighting Aspiras’s role in promoting Japanese cuisine and fostering mutual understanding between the two nations.
During the awarding, Ambassador Koshikawa praised Aspiras’s efforts, noting the significant impact of culinary experts in achieving global recognition for Japanese food. “Through the promotion of experts, tourists, and appreciators like you, in 2013, Japanese food was recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage,” Koshikawa stated. He further expressed his gratitude by saying, “I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to chef Reggie for her efforts in advancing Japanese cuisine. May your exemplary work inspire others to be cultural advocates like you.”
In her response, Aspiras emphasized the unifying power of food and her commitment to continue promoting the relations between Japan and the Philippines through culinary endeavors. “Food is the best ambassador. You will always remember what you eat. Food is what brings us together. In my own little way, I will continue to bring our two nations together one dish and one bite at a time,” Aspiras remarked.
Aspiras’s contributions extend beyond her kitchen. She played a pivotal role in a Japanese-produced documentary about Daisuke Suzuki, the envoy’s resident chef, and co-authored a recipe book featuring Suzuki’s guava sinigang. This dish, a fusion of Filipino sour soup broth with Japanese seasonings, represents the harmonious blend of the two countries’ culinary traditions—a favorite of Ambassador Koshikawa.
Moreover, Aspiras hosts the “Kitchens of the World” international culinary tour, which offers tourists immersive food experiences that reflect a country’s culture. This year, the tour is set to explore Japan, further strengthening the cultural and culinary ties between the two countries.
