Filipino celebrities and netizens criticize Senator Estrada for handling of sexual abuse hearing

Filipino celebrities and netizens have condemned Senator Jinggoy Estrada’s approach during a recent public hearing on sexual abuse, accusing him of victim blaming. Estrada questioned Sandro Muhlach, an actor who alleged sexual abuse by two independent contractors from GMA-7, about the incident, leading to criticism for his insensitivity.

Veteran broadcaster Karen Davila called for lawmakers to treat victims with “compassion” and “sensitivity,” highlighting the difficulty survivors face when recounting traumatic experiences. “Reliving a traumatic experience is horrific, more so in a public hearing,” Davila wrote on X, urging senators to avoid public shaming that discourages victims from coming forward.

During the hearing, Estrada repeatedly demanded details of the alleged assault, prompting Muhlach’s lawyer, Czarina Raz, to request a private session due to the emotional strain on her client. Estrada agreed to an executive session after expressing frustration at the lack of detailed testimony.

The inquiry, intended to address sexual abuse within the entertainment industry, has sparked a broader conversation online. Critics argue that Estrada’s methods were inappropriate and lacked empathy. John Arcilla and other figures in the entertainment industry voiced support for Davila’s stance against victim blaming, while some online users suggested the matter should be handled privately to protect the victims’ well-being.

Estrada defended his actions, citing frustration over the persistent issue of sexual abuse in the industry. He expressed his willingness to accept criticism if it would help shed light on the problem and urged for stronger anti-sexual harassment laws.

Despite the backlash, Estrada stated he is committed to providing support for victims and fostering a safer environment within the industry.
