Filipino Catholics in Australia gather for 6th Almusalan, celebrating faith and thanksgiving

Today, our hearts were filled with gratitude as we gathered for the 6th Almusalan—a cherished Filipino tradition of thanksgiving breakfast—following commemoration of the first Catholic mass on Australian soil at La Perouse in Sydney’s East. More than just a meal, this annual event celebrated faith, friendship, and the blessings we continue to receive as Catholics in Australia.

The priest’s sermon during the mass deeply resonated with us, reminding us of the divine hand that shapes history. He spoke of how the arrival of English and French explorers in Australia during the early 18th century was not a coincidence but part of God’s grand design. The Catholic faith reached these distant shores through these voyages, taking root and flourishing over time. The priest’s reflection brought to mind a parallel story—the coming of the Spaniards to the Philippines in the 1500s. Just as Spain brought the Catholic faith to our homeland, explorers to Australia paved the way for the growth of the Church here.

The Almusalan following the mass was an expression of thanksgiving—for our faith, our community, and the opportunity to live and share our beliefs in our adopted home. Filipino and non-Filipino Catholics came together, united by our shared love for God and His Church. Under the open sky, we enjoyed a delightful spread of traditional Filipino dishes lovingly prepared by community members. Children played joyfully while old and new friends engaged in meaningful conversations, strengthening the bonds that tie us together.

This gathering was a testament to faith’s enduring power and community’s beauty. It reminded us that although we come from different backgrounds, we are one in Christ. Together, we celebrated not only the history of the Church but also its future, which we continue to nurture here in Australia.

As we look ahead, we remain hopeful for many more years of Almusalan, where faith, friendship, and thanksgiving will continue to bring us together. Today’s celebration affirmed that no matter where life takes us, our Catholic faith remains a guiding light—one we cherish, share and joyfully pass on to the next generation.
