Alvin Flex, a Dubai-based Filipino athlete, once again made his country proud after securing the bronze medal in the Men’s Physique (above 175cm) category at the Dubai Pro 2025, held from June 20 to 22. This marks his second consecutive podium finish, following his 4th-place breakthrough last year that also earned him a bronze.
“This year felt more meaningful because it reminded me that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be,” said the 38-year-old competitor during a recent interview with TGFM. “Last year’s 4th place was a breakthrough—it was my first real entry into this sport. But this year, even though I placed 5th, I still brought home the bronze, and it honestly felt like an even bigger win.”

Dubai Pro, an IFBB-sanctioned Olympia qualifier, drew elite athletes from across the globe. Despite the intensified competition, Alvin remained undeterred. “The competition was on another level—these guys were huge, seasoned, and fully dialed in. I’ve only been focused on bodybuilding since last year, so to even stand next to them and place is already a blessing.”
While many would expect physical preparation to be the highlight, Alvin pointed to something greater: “God’s favor showed up. This win is not just for me—it’s to glorify Him.”
He also credited the support of those behind the scenes who helped make his appearance possible. “To those who helped fund my registration, meals, and competition prep—my silent sponsors and real-life angels—thank you from the bottom of my heart. This medal is yours too.”

Sharpening the craft
Guided by coach Mark Go, Alvin focused his 2025 preparations on refining physique symmetry and stage presence. “We adjusted my training to add more width to my shoulders and improve back detail, while keeping a tight waistline. Nutrition, posing, and mental prep were just as important,” he said. “The biggest change? I’ve learned to be more intentional and disciplined in every aspect of my prep.”
With this year’s Dubai Pro stretched over three days, energy management was critical. Alvin made sure no detail was left to chance. “One big lesson came from last year—my wife and my coach barely got any sleep the night before show day because they were still preparing my meals. This year, me and my wife cooked everything in advance, vacuum-sealed the meals, and froze them. Once we checked into the hotel, everything was ready—all I had to do was rest, reheat, eat, and stay focused.”
This level of preparation—paired with hydration, timing, and rest—kept him in peak condition. But Alvin credits prayer as his true source of strength. “I kept my heart anchored in prayer. God’s grace carried me through each day—even when the pressure and fatigue hit.”

What’s next for Alvin?
Having steadily climbed the competitive ladder, Alvin now sets his eyes on a bigger goal: “My ultimate goal is to earn my IFBB Pro Card and represent the Philippines on a bigger stage,” he shared. “But beyond that, I want to uplift others—especially Filipino athletes—through this sport.”
Alvin is also scheduled to compete again this November 2025 in Kazakhstan, followed by a return to the Philippines in October 2026 for a special homecoming event. “Dubai Pro 2026 is also on the horizon,” he confirmed. “Every competition is more than just a shot at a medal—it’s an opportunity to level up.”
In terms of physique goals, Alvin aims to grow with precision. “We’re aiming to bring my weight up to around 110kg in a solid off-season build—not just to get bigger, but to get better. More density, more presence, more refinement—especially in areas like my back and delts.”

Even in the off-season, he stays disciplined: “Growth doesn’t just happen in the gym—it’s in the choices I make every day.”
A deeper victory
What made this year’s win even more powerful was the personal trial he and his wife endured just weeks before the show. “My wife faced a life-threatening health scare. We were in and out of the hospital and emergency rooms for over two weeks. There was a moment when we truly considered backing out if her condition didn’t improve.”

Through prayer and recovery, she pulled through. “We made it. We stood on that stage with a heart full of gratitude and a testimony of grace.”
For Alvin, this medal is more than a fitness accolade—it’s a reflection of faith, resilience, and purpose. “This bronze medal is a symbol of more than just fitness—it’s a reminder of God’s covering, our shared strength as husband and wife, and the purpose behind the pain.”
Inspiring the next generation
Alvin has become a beacon of hope for aspiring Filipino athletes, especially overseas workers pursuing dreams against all odds.
“You don’t need a fancy gym, expensive gear, or a massive following to begin,” he said. “What you need is a clear purpose, discipline, and faith in the process… and above all—honor God with your talent. He sees your effort. You are capable of doing great things.”
