A Filipino bodybuilder based in Dubai has secured 4th place in the Men’s Physique above 175cm category at the prestigious Dubai Pro 2024. Alvin Flex’s achievement stands out as he was the only Filipino participant to place in this highly competitive category, showcasing his talent and commitment to the sport.
The 38-year-old Filipino’s journey into bodybuilding began six years ago, transitioning from a background in triathlon and CrossFit.
“Securing 4th place at the Dubai Pro in the Men’s Physique above 175cm category is a significant achievement for me. My journey into bodybuilding started when I noticed changes in my physique from triathlon and CrossFit and developed an interest in muscle aesthetics,” Alvin shared with The Global Filipino Magazine.
The inspiration to compete in the Dubai Pro came from Alvin’s desire to test himself on an international stage.
“The prestige of the competition and the opportunity to challenge myself further motivated me to prepare rigorously. My preparation involved a disciplined routine of training, dieting, and posing practice, along with working closely with my coach, Mark Go, to refine my physique and presentation,” he explained.
Alvin’s daily training routine was rigorous and meticulously planned.
“My daily training routine starts with fasted cardio at 4:30 a.m. for one hour. I then return to the gym at noon for intense weightlifting sessions, focusing on different muscle groups each day with a mix of compound and isolation exercises. I conclude my workouts with an additional cardio session in the evening,” Alvin described.
Balancing bodybuilding with a full-time profession is no easy feat. Alvin works as a fitness and swimming coach, which demands significant time and focus.
“Balancing bodybuilding with my full-time profession is challenging. I manage this by adhering to a strict schedule that accommodates training and meal preparation around my work commitments. This often means early mornings and late nights, but the dedication is worth it,” he said.
Representing the Philippines on such a big stage brought Alvin immense pride.
“It fills me with pride to showcase Filipino talent and determination internationally. I hope my performance serves as an inspiration to others in my country,” he expressed.
The journey to the Dubai Pro was not without its challenges. Alvin highlighted managing fatigue and maintaining mental focus as some of the biggest hurdles.
“I overcame this with mental resilience, the support of my coach, and the encouragement of my family and friends, especially my wife,” he noted.
Alvin attributes his success to the unwavering support of his coach, family, and fellow athletes.
“My biggest supporters are my coach, my family, especially my in-laws and my niece, and my wife. Their belief in me and guidance have been crucial throughout this journey,” he added.
