The 24th season of NBC’s “The Voice” witnessed a remarkable blind audition when 17-year-old Filipino-American, Kaylee Shimizu, performed a captivating rendition of The Beatles’ “Golden Slumbers.” Originally from Ewa Beach, Hawai’i, Shimizu’s performance earned a four-chair turn and a standing ovation from the coaches.
As soon as Shimizu sang the first few notes, all four coaches were clearly impressed. Following her performance, a visibly stunned John Legend commented, “We’re just stunned right now,” further describing her voice as “dazzling, creative, and musical.” Niall Horan added humorously, “I can’t believe what just happened.”
Growing up in a Filipino household, Shimizu credited her love for singing to family karaoke sessions. She proudly introduced her supportive family on stage, a testament to her close-knit ties.
Gwen Stefani, another coach on the show, remarked that she had never encountered a voice quite like Shimizu’s. Indeed, Shimizu’s talent seems to resonate with many Filipinos, who are eagerly cheering for her as she advances in the competition.
It’s worth noting that this wasn’t Shimizu’s debut in front of cameras. At the age of 11, she was featured on Hawaiian news outlet Living808, where she performed Michael Bublé’s “Feeling Good.” It was evident even then that her musical journey was destined for greatness.
Her recent audition on “The Voice” quickly gained traction online, garnering over a million views in just two days. Now, under John Legend’s mentorship, Shimizu continues her journey in the competition.
