A Filipino-American officer of the San Diego Police Department, Austin Machitar, 30, was killed on Monday after a vehicle collided with his patrol car during a response to a car chase on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.
Officer Machitar, who had served in the department for five years and was also a field training officer, was on duty with his colleague, Zach Martinez, 27, who is currently in critical condition. The driver involved in the crash also died, but authorities have yet to release their identity.
California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his condolences, stating, “Jennifer and I are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Officer Machitar. His loved ones, friends, and colleagues at the San Diego Police Department are in our hearts during this difficult time.”
