Filipina talent coordinator shines in Dubai’s entertainment industry

Maria Theresa Azores embodies the resilience, determination, and success that Filipinos can achieve abroad. As a 40-year-old Talent Coordinator at Curveball Talents, her evolution from a young hopeful into a seasoned professional reflects the collective aspirations and challenges encountered by the Filipino diaspora. Azores’s story is a vivid illustration of how perseverance and hard work can lead to remarkable achievements, even far from home.

Reflecting on her beginnings, Azores shares with The Global Filipino Magazine, “I came to Dubai when I was 22 years old as an Admin Assistant. It was a role filled with potential, which motivated me to continue my education in Dubai while building a career.”

This proactive approach to personal and professional development has been a cornerstone of her success.

The decision to move abroad was driven by unexpected opportunity.

Azores recalls, “The opportunity came to me as a surprise, and before I knew it, I landed in this amazing place I had never heard of before.”

Her career abroad began on August 12, 2006, marking the start of an 18-year journey filled with growth, learning, and achievement.

Before her move, Azores’s work life in the Philippines involved juggling roles as a secretary and a waitress. Her transition to the UAE marked a significant turn in her career trajectory.

“I was in an office full of extraordinarily smart people. Obviously, I learned so much from them,” she notes, recounting her rise from Personal Assistant to Branch Manager, overseeing operations in the UAE and India.

Her work in a Dubai-based Rehabilitation and Medical Centre stands out as particularly rewarding.

“It’s extremely rewarding for me because in this industry I don’t only think strategically; I was able to feel, console, and help others in a more human way,” she reflects.

Today, Azores’s role in the entertainment industry brings her immense joy and satisfaction.

“One day I am in the office, the next I am at a high-profile event. It’s exciting; no day is the same,” she says, emphasizing the dynamic nature of her work.

Her passion for her field is palpable as she describes the thrill of working alongside phenomenal colleagues and interacting with industry professionals and celebrities alike.

Life in the UAE has provided Azores and her sons with safety, happiness, and stability. However, the journey has not been without its struggles. The year 2020 was particularly challenging for Azores, as she faced significant personal and professional losses. Yet, through resilience and the support of those around her, she persevered.

“I’ve struggled emotionally, mentally, and financially, but was blessed enough to have people willing to help me through the tough times,” she shares.

Her son Ian, friend Heather Harries, and mentor Karin Drane have been her pillars of support, offering love, advice, and guidance when needed most.

Looking ahead, Azores envisions a future filled with continuous work and passion.

“I do not think I will ever retire. I love working with great talents,” she asserts, highlighting her dedication to her profession and the industry she loves.

For her, the UAE feels like home, a sentiment shared by her family.

To fellow Filipinos facing challenges abroad, Azores offers heartfelt advice: “Asking for help is not a weakness. It is a strength,” she advises, underscoring the importance of resilience, openness to learning, and self-care.

Her journey illustrates the power of perseverance, the value of community, and the endless possibilities that await those who pursue their dreams with courage and determination.
