Filipina regains confidence after 35 years with life-changing eye surgery in UAE

After 35 years of living with the emotional and physical impact of losing an eye in a childhood accident, 42-year-old Jovy has finally regained her confidence through a groundbreaking oculoplastic surgery in the UAE.

Jovy was just seven years old when a sharp stick struck her eye, causing irreversible damage that led to its removal. Over time, her eye socket shrank, making it impossible to wear a prosthetic eye. The physical loss evolved into an emotional burden, leading her to avoid social interactions and struggle with self-esteem.

“For decades, I believed there was no solution for me. I felt incomplete and avoided looking in the mirror,” she shared.

Her life took a remarkable turn when she underwent socket reconstruction and prosthetic eye placement at Medcare Hospital, Sharjah, under the expertise of Dr. Fairooz P. Manjandavida, a Specialist Oculoplastic Surgeon.

“Jovy had lived with this trauma for so long that she was convinced nothing could be done,” said Dr. Fairooz. “Our goal was not just to restore symmetry but to help her heal—physically and emotionally.”

The complex procedure involved a Dermis Fat Graft, which transplanted living tissue to restore lost volume in the socket. After a meticulous three-hour surgery, followed by weeks of healing, Jovy was fitted with a custom-made prosthetic eye, restoring her natural appearance.

“The transformation was incredible. For the first time in 35 years, Jovy could look in the mirror and see herself as whole again,” Dr. Fairooz added.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Jovy described the surgery as life-changing. “For years, I felt like people only saw what I had lost. Now, I feel like myself again. I can smile, socialize, and live without fear.”
