A Filipino expatriate family’s story of hardship and resilience has touched hearts across the UAE, as 30-year-old Tina Arlene Tawat pleads for help to free her parents from financial and legal challenges. Previously reported by Khaleej Times, her father, Ernesto Arnel Tawat, has been battling the consequences of a life-altering accident since 2006, leaving him paralyzed and burdened by Dh93,000 in blood money debt.
Tina, who was born and raised in the UAE, is now the family’s beacon of hope, determined to secure a dignified return for her elderly parents to the Philippines.
In 2006, Ernesto was involved in a car accident that tragically claimed a life. While declared innocent, he was required to pay blood money and served over a year in prison before being relocated. Shortly after, he suffered a debilitating stroke that left him paralyzed on his right side. Without proper legal documentation, his access to medical care became limited, leaving the family to navigate the challenges alone.
“My father’s life has been marked by pain and struggle,” Tina shared with The Global Filipino Magazine. “Even after his release, his health deteriorated, and we have faced an uphill battle ever since.”
Tina, who works as an administrative staff member, has been the family’s main source of support. Despite her modest income and her own health struggles with asthma and pneumonia, she continues to work tirelessly to care for her parents.
“My parents deserve peace and dignity in their remaining years,” Tina said. “I dream of giving them a chance to return home debt-free, to reunite with loved ones they have not seen in decades.”
Her plea resonates with many who understand the sacrifices of migrant workers and their families. Tina detailed the years of hardship, including starting work at the age of 12 to support her family, facing threats of blackmail due to their precarious residency status, and dealing with the emotional toll of losing contact with relatives in the Philippines.
Through it all, Tina has clung to her faith. “God has been our anchor during these difficult times,” she said. “Even when it seemed like there was no way out, I believed there would be light.”
How to help
The family is seeking assistance to settle Ernesto’s debts, cover medical expenses, and complete the legal formalities required for him to leave the UAE.
Tina is appealing to the community for prayers, shares, and financial contributions. She emphasized transparency, directing potential donors to Khaleej Times for verification of their story.
