Filipina in Dubai discovered with gigantic myoma the size of an eight-month-old baby

A Filipina patient based in Dubai was found to have a fibroid in her womb that resembled a human baby in size and shape. The uterine fibroid, known as myoma, measured a staggering 22cm x 10cm and weighed 3kg, leading to a condition almost resembling an eight-month pregnancy.

The patient, Jessica Delis Santos, 33, underwent a myomectomy, a surgical procedure to remove uterine fibroids while preserving the uterus, under the care of Dr. Caroline Alphine Jenitha, an Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialist at Aster Hospital, Mankhool.

Myomas, or uterine fibroids, are non-cancerous growths of tissue within the uterus. Removing them can help preserve a patient’s fertility.

Santos had previously undergone a myomectomy in 2011 to remove a 16cm fibroid in her hometown. However, she sought medical attention again due to severe stomach pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, abdominal hardening, and weight loss. An ultrasound revealed the need for surgery, and she was referred to Dr. Jenitha at Aster Hospital Mankhool.

During the examination, Dr. Jenitha discovered a 3kg myoma measuring 22cm x 10cm, protruding from the posterior wall of Santos’ uterus. The fibroid extended up to below her rib cage, significantly larger than the average size, giving the appearance of an eight-month pregnant abdomen.

An immediate surgery was scheduled, performed under general anesthesia, and required intricate procedures on the patient, who weighed just 45kg.

Dr. Jenitha was quoted as saying by Gulf News, “The patient presented a unique and very rare challenge due to the size and extensive bowel adhesions. The surgery required careful planning and execution, and I am pleased with the successful outcome. This emphasizes the importance of regular check-ups and timely intervention in managing gynecological conditions.”

Santos expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am thankful to Dr. Jenitha and the entire team at the hospital. The stomach pain and discomfort I faced before the surgery were overwhelming, and the relief I feel now is beyond words. I appreciate the professionalism and compassion shown by everyone involved in my treatment.”

Uterine fibroids, or myomas, are common non-cancerous growths within the uterus, varying in size and number. A very large fibroid can distort the uterus and, in some cases, fill the pelvis and stomach area, leading to symptoms such as stomach pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, frequent urination or trouble urinating, constipation, and a growing abdomen. Regular check-ups and timely intervention are essential for managing gynecological conditions like these.
