A Filipina caregiver, Mary Grace Santos, was found dead in the basement closet of her employer’s residence in Amman, Jordan. She had been reported missing by her family on October 11 and was discovered the following day.
Santos, 34, had been in Jordan since 2015, providing care for an elderly couple. She was a mother to two teenage daughters in Pampanga, with one requiring heart surgery due to a congenital condition.
Tragically, a police report indicates that Santos was raped and then strangled. Authorities have apprehended the main suspect, an Egyptian minor, who is the son of Santos’ co-worker. On the day of the incident, the suspect had filled in for his father, working in the employer’s garden.
Veronica, Santos’ sister, relayed this information to the media. The Jordanian legal system anticipates that the perpetrator will face the death penalty due to the heinous nature of the crime.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration played a pivotal role in assisting the Santos family in the search. The Department of Migrant Workers announced plans to repatriate Mary Grace Santos’ remains by October 21.
