Filipina architect shines in Qatar with 19 years of innovative design and leadership

In the domain of architecture, where every line and curve manifests an untold story, Ar. Carolyn Acebuche Camarao stands as a paragon of innovation, resilience, and expertise. Her journey, unfolding over 19 years in the dynamic landscape of Doha, Qatar, vividly showcases the tenacity and skill of a Filipino architect who dared to dream big and transform those dreams into tangible achievements.

Ar. Carolyn’s saga began in 2006 when she embarked on her overseas career directly from the Philippines.

Reflecting on her initial steps, she shares with The Global Filipino Magazine, “I was hired directly from the Philippines in 2006, I have my first job as Site Architect handling with towers and government office eventually promoted to be a Project Manager.”

This role set the stage for a career that would see her ascend to impressive professional heights.

With a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the Technological Institute of the Philippines-Manila and as a candidate for a Master’s Degree in Sustainable Architecture at Mapua University-Manila, Ar. Carolyn’s academic foundation was as robust as the structures she would go on to design and manage. Her expertise spans technical and design consultancy, project management, and construction management, illustrating a multifaceted approach to her profession.

Ar. Carolyn’s professional narrative is a blend of triumphs and adversities. She recalls her early struggles in the Philippines, where financial constraints were a constant challenge.

“I have struggled financially due to the salary is insufficient for all my expenditures in life,” she reminisces.

This struggle fueled her ambition to seek opportunities overseas, where she not only found financial stability but also a platform to showcase her talents.

In Qatar, Ar. Carolyn faced a different set of challenges, particularly in her role as an Architectural Design Coordinator/Manager.

“I faced severe difficulties and challenges when I have worked in a multi-corporation company…they are not able to be controlled neither to follow me as their head due to ego and pride,” she recounts.

Yet, with pragmatism and open communication, she navigated these challenges, underscoring her resilience and leadership skills.

Celebrating diversity and innovation

Ar. Carolyn’s career in Qatar was a vibrant mosaic of diverse projects. Her involvement in the design and construction of military facilities, railway engineering, sustainability, innovations of design and technology, and other complex architectural projects in an international setting, speaks volumes of her adaptability and innovative spirit.

“I have gained extensive experience in the design and Construction of Military Facilities, Railway Engineering, Sustainability, Innovations of Design and Technology,” she explains, highlighting the breadth of her expertise.

A pillar in the community

Beyond her professional achievements, Ar. Carolyn has been a beacon in her community. As the 12th Chapter President of the United Architects of the Philippines-Qatar Chapter, she has been a guiding light for fellow professionals. Her community service extends to teaching English to construction workers and volunteering in various capacities, reflecting her dedication to giving back.

Looking forward, Ar. Carolyn aspires to establish her own architectural firm, continuing her journey of innovation and leadership.

Her advice to fellow Filipinos abroad is poignant and empowering: “Trust yourself, know yourself, be confident and strong-willed… FEAR is only in the state of mind,” she advises.

Ar. Carolyn’s story is not just one of architectural accomplishment but also of personal growth, community service, and empowering others.

She concludes with a profound thought: “Do not compare yourself to others, just learn how to deal and develop into a progressive individual…we are all equally created by God with our own set of talents.”
