A Filipino architect in the UAE has been named one of the Middle East’s Top 30 Influential Architects in the 2024 Powerlist by Design Middle East. Securing the 30th spot, Christina Espinosa-Erlanda’s recognition in the March 2024 issue underlines her dedication and leadership in delivering comprehensive design solutions that span from concept to completion.
Christine, with a rich career that extends over 16 years outside her home country, is known for her role in crafting project proposals, guiding design guidelines, and ensuring the successful management and execution of architectural projects. Her membership in several prestigious organizations—including the Royal Institute of British Architects and the United Architects of the Philippines—speaks volumes about her commitment to excellence and her influential position in the field.
In a candid interview with The Global Filipino Magazine, Christine shared her journey from a young, imaginative child in Manila to a celebrated architect on the international stage.
“My fascination with the world around me began early… I have always been creative, curious, and fascinated with how things work,” she reminisced about her early love for design and architecture.
This passion, she explained, was the driving force behind her decision to pursue architecture, despite the challenges posed by societal expectations and the male-dominated nature of the field.
Reflecting on her inclusion in the Middle East’s top architects, Christine expressed a profound sense of humility and gratitude.
“It feels surreal, humbling, and incredibly rewarding to be recognized… Typically, the buildings we design get recognized, but this list celebrates the architects behind these creations,” she stated, emphasizing the collaborative effort required to bring architectural visions to life.
Discussing her approach to project management and design at Godwin Austen Johnson, where she plays a pivotal role, Christine outlined the importance of understanding client needs and fostering a creative and inclusive team environment.
“We start by diving into the details of the project… Our main aim is to prioritize the project’s identity by designing buildings that look good and promote user well-being,” she explained.
Leading a diverse team presents its challenges, but for Christine, “the challenge is to strike a balance since my job isn’t to dictate but to lead,” creating a space where creativity is celebrated and every team member feels empowered.
Her studies in business for architecture and design have been instrumental in honing her leadership and strategic planning skills, which are crucial for navigating the complexities of architectural projects and client relations.
“Having a background in business and entrepreneurship was a game-changer,” Christine noted, highlighting how this knowledge has enabled her to effectively lead her team, manage client expectations, and ensure the financial viability of projects.
To aspiring architects, Christine offers words of encouragement and wisdom: “Never stop dreaming. Follow your passion… Challenges will arise, but use them as fuel to innovate.” She stresses the importance of resilience, collaboration, and the continuous pursuit of learning and growth in the field of architecture.
