A 13-year-old Filipino-Australian from Gold Coast has claimed the bronze medal in the 14 and Under Boys Singles Skill category at the 2024 Trilogy Funds Australian Pickleball Championships (APC) held from October 2 to 7, GMA News reported. Marking his tournament debut, Segui’s podium finish came on his birthday, making it a memorable achievement.
The APC, the largest pickleball event in the Southern Hemisphere, brought together over 1,200 participants, according to Pickleball Australia Association (PAA). This year’s tournament, billed as the second largest outside of the United States, encouraged players of various skill levels, including individuals with disabilities, to compete.
In addition to singles, Segui also competed in the 18 and Under Boys Doubles Skill category but fell to seasoned opponents. Representing Queensland, Segui edged out a competitor from Victoria in singles to secure his spot in the top three.
Having started pickleball recreationally two years ago, Segui trained intensively with his friend’s father, a professional player, and a seeded coach in preparation for the tournament. Segui’s growing interest in pickleball complements his other sports pursuits, including tennis, swimming, and volleyball. His school volleyball team also won silver in the 2024 Volleyball Queensland Junior Schools Cup this month.
Segui’s parents, Oliver and Juliette, migrated to Australia from the Philippines in 2007. Oliver, a practicing doctor in Gold Coast, and Javier share the same birthday, adding to the celebrations on tournament day.
