Fans rally behind Regine Velasquez after controversial MYX promo placement

The ABS-CBN Digital Team issued a public apology to Regine Velasquez following backlash over a MYX Music Awards promo material where her photo was placed last among younger celebrities. The incident sparked criticism online, with many fans describing it as “disrespectful” toward the OPM icon.

The now-deleted promo showcased the presenters for the 2024 MYX Music Awards. Velasquez, along with BINI members Jhoanna and Maloi, James Reid, “Pinoy Big Brother: Gen 11” big winner Fyang Smith, Elijah Canlas, Gloc-9, Chloe San Jose, Alexa Ilacad, and KD Estrada, was featured in the material. However, Velasquez’s photo, alongside Gloc-9’s, was positioned in the second row, while the younger artists were prominently highlighted.

Outrage brewed on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), with netizens calling it an “insult” to Velasquez’s legacy. Some also noted Gloc-9’s similar placement in the promo, sparking a broader discussion about respect for veteran artists.

In response, ABS-CBN sent Velasquez flowers and a handwritten apology, which she shared on Instagram. The note read:
“Dear Ms. Regine, we would like to sincerely apologize [for] the oversight in the promo material we released yesterday. We have deep respect and admiration for your craft [and the] remarkable contribution you have given the music industry. We will strive to do better moving forward. Maraming salamat po sa inyong pag-unawa.”

Velasquez thanked the team for their gesture, posting, “Thank you so much for the beautiful flowers. Again, you guys didn’t have to, but I appreciate it,” adding the hashtag “#ThankYouKalmaNa.”

Amid the controversy, Velasquez took to TikTok to address her perspective on her place in the industry.
“I wanted to talk to you about me saying it’s no longer my time. ’Cause for some reason, people would get upset whenever I say that,” Velasquez said. “Don’t panic, don’t be upset—it’s not a bad thing. I’m just being realistic because it’s true. It’s no longer my time. That means I can no longer compete with the young ones.”

The 54-year-old singer, who has spent nearly 40 years in the music industry, added that she now sees herself as a mentor rather than a competitor.
“I’m enjoying my life and the respect I get from my peers. I think it’s very healthy to be aware of where I am in the industry,” she explained.

Meanwhile, the 2024 MYX Music Awards, held on November 21, celebrated OPM talents, with P-pop groups SB19 and BINI taking home major accolades.
