A European woman has been sentenced to one month in jail and will be deported after she was caught stealing a designer handbag worth AED 7,000 from a luxury store in a Dubai mall.
The theft took place during what appeared to be a routine shopping visit involving five individuals—one man and four women—who entered the store posing as customers. According to a Khaleej Times report, citing official court documents, the group distracted the sales staff by asking questions about various products, giving one of the women the opportunity to discreetly take the expensive handbag.
Suspicion arose shortly after the group left, prompting a store employee to review CCTV footage. The surveillance clearly showed the moment the theft occurred and how the group coordinated the distraction.
Dubai Police launched a swift investigation, analyzed the footage, and tracked down the female suspect. She was arrested and confessed to taking the item while shopping with her siblings.
The case was referred to the Misdemeanour Court, where she was found guilty and handed a one-month jail sentence followed by deportation.
Authorities reminded the public that retail theft remains a punishable crime under UAE law, no matter the background of the offender or the item’s cost.
