Passengers travelling through Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport face further disruption after Etihad Airways pushed back its resumption of services, with cancellations now affecting arrivals scheduled before 2pm local time on Monday, March 2.
The airline’s updated travel advisory states that all departures from Abu Dhabi remain suspended until 2pm Sunday. Inbound flights due to land after that Monday deadline are expected to operate, though the carrier cautioned that operational conditions could still force changes.
Etihad acknowledged the strain on its customer service lines. “We are currently experiencing a significantly high volume of calls and appreciate your patience as it may take longer than usual for calls to be answered,” the airline said, adding that affected passengers are being contacted directly and offered rebooking and hotel accommodation where required.
The disruption stems from a decision by the General Civil Aviation Authority to partially close UAE airspace as a precautionary measure in response to what it described as “rapidly evolving regional security developments.” The authority said the closure followed a comprehensive assessment of security and operational risks carried out in coordination with national and international bodies, with airspace safety and the protection of UAE sovereignty described as absolute priorities.
No end date for the closure has been announced. The National Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Authority said the situation is being monitored continuously and remains under control.
Passengers have been directed to check directly with their airlines for schedule updates. Where needed, airlines are expected to arrange accommodation and assistance in coordination with local authorities.
Etihad said it is working closely with relevant authorities and will restore normal operations as soon as conditions allow. “The situation remains fluid and further adjustments may be required,” the airline said.
