Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile has cautioned against the potential consequences of Vice President Sara Duterte’s alleged threats toward President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
In a statement on Thursday, February 13, Enrile emphasized the gravity of Duterte’s remarks, stating that they carry “serious underlying implications.”
“In every crime, there must be a ‘guilty act’ and a ‘guilty mind.’ In the aforesaid statement of Sara, the guilty act is the command—‘patayin mo si BBM, si Liza Araneta, at si Martin Romualdez.’ And the guilty mind is to avenge Sara’s killing, should it happen,” he explained.
Enrile warned that if an attempt on the vice president’s life were to occur but fail, suspicion could immediately fall on Marcos, Araneta-Marcos, and Romualdez, even if they were uninvolved. Such a scenario, he noted, would further intensify political tensions.
He also urged both sides to be vigilant, cautioning against individuals who might exploit the situation for personal or political gain.
