Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile took to Facebook on Tuesday night to call out what he described as the “irony” of individuals who have committed violent injustices now pleading for justice.
Without naming anyone, Enrile’s remarks came just after the issuance of an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against former President Rodrigo Duterte over alleged crimes against humanity related to his administration’s war on drugs.
“What a pathetic and ghastly irony!” Enrile wrote, criticizing those who, he claimed, are now “drowning and gasping for justice” while organizing national prayer rallies despite previously calling God “stupid.”
He further accused them of blaming others for their predicament while refusing to acknowledge their own mistakes, driven by “lust, arrogance, hubris, and hunger for power and wealth.”
Duterte’s legal team has decried the ICC’s move, arguing that his arrest was unlawful and that he was effectively kidnapped and taken to The Hague.
In his post, Enrile mocked the situation, stating that those facing legal consequences are now desperately seeking public sympathy. “They now claw for whatever support and sympathy they could muster… Karma!! Abracadabra!! What a tragic miscalculation!!!” he wrote.
