The Emirati spirit of endurance and determination reached new heights as Ras Al Khaimah’s long-distance runner, Abdulla AlShehhi, conquered the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors (WMM). This championship-style competition, which is a points-based contest, includes six of the world’s most high-profile marathons in Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York.
AlShehhi recently completed the Boston Marathon, marking the end of an eight-year journey filled with numerous challenges to earn the coveted ‘Six Star Finisher Medal’. “My journey is a testament to the power of dreams, ambition, and an unyielding spirit that refuses to be daunted by challenges,” AlShehhi said.
Fifteen years ago, AlShehhi began his transformation after realizing the impact of his excess weight on his health and future. His first run, a mere five minutes on a treadmill, left him gasping for air. Instead of discouraging him, this experience sparked his determination. He adopted healthier habits and, after months of perseverance, lost 30kg and discovered a passion for running.
AlShehhi’s journey began with the Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) Half Marathon. Seeing a promotional ad for the event, he was inspired to try long-distance running. This decision set the stage for the marathons and adventures that followed.
Through sheer willpower and commitment, AlShehhi has showcased his athletic prowess and become an inspiring symbol of resilience for his community. He invites fellow Emiratis and supporters worldwide to celebrate this milestone and continue championing perseverance and excellence.
“My mission now extends beyond the track,” AlShehhi said. “It’s about sharing my journey with my people and beyond, hoping to inspire anyone facing a dream that seems out of reach.”
Balancing his life as a dedicated petroleum engineer at ADNOC Offshore in Abu Dhabi and a passionate long-distance runner, AlShehhi is also a proud father of four. He navigates “the beautiful chaos of parenthood alongside my aspirations on the track.”
At 37 years old, AlShehhi is planning his next big challenge, hoping his achievements continue to inspire his children and those around him.
