Dubai’s Emirates airline has officially launched its first flight to Antananarivo, Madagascar’s capital, expanding its network in the Indian Ocean region. The new route, which includes a stop in the Seychelles, will operate four times weekly using a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.
The inaugural flight, EK707, was warmly welcomed with a water cannon salute at Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo. The Emirates delegation, led by Adnan Kazim, Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, was greeted by Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina and First Lady Mialy Rajoelina.
President Rajoelina emphasized the significance of this new route, stating, “This is a historic moment for Madagascar, and I am convinced it will act as a catalyst for tourism and economic development in our country.” He highlighted the potential for growth as Madagascar opens its skies to Emirates and connects with the world.
The launch was also attended by several high-profile Dubai officials, including Mohammad Lootah, President and CEO of Dubai Chambers, and Jamal Al Hai, Deputy CEO of Dubai Airports. The flight was commanded by Canadian Captain Bruce Pope and First Officer Solo Chuk, a Malagasy pilot with 14 years of experience at Emirates.
The addition of Antananarivo marks Emirates’ fifth destination in the Indian Ocean, aligning with Madagascar’s aim to boost its tourism industry to attract one million visitors by 2028. The airline announced the new service in June, aiming to enhance connectivity and provide premium travel options to the region.
