Emil Sumangil says he’s safe and well after viral report on missing sabungeros

Broadcast journalist Emil Sumangil broke his silence to assure the public that he is alive, well, and simply taking time off—amid growing concerns about his safety following his investigative report on the case of 34 missing sabungeros in the Philippines.

In a video released by GMA Public Affairs on July 12, Sumangil thanked viewers and netizens who flooded him with messages after his temporary absence from some of GMA’s programs.

“Unang una, taos puso akong nagpapasalamat… ako ay nagbakasyon lamang,” he clarified, responding to speculation that his sudden disappearance from television was linked to his bombshell report.

He emphasized that he is in a secure location, dismissing online rumors suggesting he was harmed. “Ako po ay buhay na buhay… Nasa ligtas po akong kalagayan sa awa at kalooban ng Diyos Ama,” he said, adding that he remains committed to his mission as a journalist: “Gagawin ko po ang nararapat para sa ating kababayan.”

The concern heightened after his wife, Michelle Sumangil, made a public plea for prayers. “With all humility, I ask for your prayers for my husband… Emil is simply doing what he was called to do — to seek truth, to serve the people, and to give voice to the unheard,” she shared.

Sumangil’s recent exposé included an exclusive interview with whistleblower Julie “Dondon” Patidongan, who implicated businessman Atong Ang and actress Gretchen Barretto in the alleged abduction and disappearance of the sabungeros—allegations both Ang and Barretto have denied. Patidongan also claimed the victims’ bodies were dumped in Taal Lake.

Sumangil currently anchors GMA’s flagship newscast 24 Oras and the investigative public service show Resibo.
