Veteran broadcast journalist Emil Sumangil has drawn strength from his faith as he continues to report on the controversial case of the missing sabungeros in the Philippines—a story that has put him in the spotlight and potentially in harm’s way.
In a heartfelt post on Instagram on July 18, Sumangil shared a photo of himself holding a rosary, accompanying it with a prayer asking for divine protection from the dangers tied to his work and the temptations that weigh on his spirit.
Earlier, concerns had surfaced over his sudden absence from his regular news programs. Addressing these, Sumangil reassured the public that he is “in a safe condition by the mercy and will of God” and had only taken a short vacation. He emphasized his continued commitment to doing what is right “in accordance with the will of the Almighty Father.”
Sumangil has been covering the high-profile disappearance of cockfighting enthusiasts, a case that recently escalated following his interview with whistleblower Julie “Dondon” Patidongan. In that interview, Patidongan implicated prominent figures, including gaming businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang and actress Gretchen Barretto—both of whom have denied any involvement.
