The Philippine Embassy in Cairo has urged Filipinos in Egypt and those planning to work there to stay alert against recruitment schemes that lure workers with job offers in another country but end up deploying them to Egypt without legal papers. These illegal arrangements, the Embassy stressed, often leave workers vulnerable to exploitation, detention, or deportation.
The Embassy reminded aspiring overseas workers to secure employment only through agencies accredited by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). It emphasized that contracts must meet mandated standards, including proper work permits, valid visas, employer accreditation, and DMW-approved salary requirements.
Filipinos already in the country were likewise advised to guard against suspicious job offers and to immediately report unauthorized recruitment activities to the Embassy or the DMW. Recruiters promising “easy placement” in Egypt without full documentation were flagged as a serious red flag.
Officials also reiterated that foreign workers in Egypt, including the Filipino community estimated at several thousand mostly based in Cairo, Alexandria, and Giza, are required to secure work permits and licenses from the Egyptian Ministry of Manpower.
To avoid immigration issues while living or working in Egypt, Filipinos were urged to always carry valid identification and residency cards and to cooperate with authorities during any verification checks. The Embassy also reminded workers that Philippine passports remain government property and must not be held by employers.
