An 84-year-old grandmother is in critical condition after her son-in-law doused her with gasoline and set her on fire in Carcar City, Cebu. The shocking incident was captured on video by the suspect’s 11-year-old child, whom he ordered to record the crime.
According to a report by GMA Regional TV, the victim was doing laundry when the suspect poured gasoline on her and ignited it. The video reportedly captured the child’s panic and distress as he witnessed the attack on his grandmother.
The victim sustained third-degree burns and remains under observation in the hospital. Authorities revealed that the suspect was intoxicated at the time of the crime. The child recounted being handed a cellphone and told by his father to film the incident.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Ruel Burlat, chief of the Carcar City Police, disclosed that the suspect and victim had long-standing disputes. The attack was allegedly triggered by the suspect’s claim that his mother-in-law was “brainwashing” his wife, who had been missing from their home since December.
The suspect, now in custody, claimed his mother-in-law was turning his wife against him. However, the child stated that his mother fled due to his father’s abusive behavior.
The young witness expressed deep sorrow and anger over his grandmother’s suffering. “I can’t forgive him. What he did to my grandmother was heartless and disrespectful,” he said.
The suspect faces charges of frustrated murder.
