EJ Obiena, the Philippines’ top pole vaulter, took to Facebook after his remarkable performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he narrowly missed a podium finish, placing fourth in the men’s pole vault final. In his post, Obiena expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received from Filipinos worldwide.
“I am filled with gratitude for the support of all of you, and to be loved at times like this, by the country that raised me. I am indeed blessed!!” Obiena wrote, acknowledging the love and encouragement he has received post-Olympics.
Despite clearing an impressive 5.90 meters, Obiena was unable to surpass the 5.95-meter bar, which would have secured him a medal. Reflecting on his performance, Obiena emphasized that one’s worth is not determined by a single event but by the cumulative achievements over time.
“I finished 4th in Paris, close but not good enough. I am not measured by this. I am measured by my career,” he stated. “I commit to everyone now, I am back in training, I am back in the game, and I am going to attack the rest of the season and make you proud.”
He assured his supporters that they can expect more from him as he remains focused on representing the Philippines on the global stage.
“Let’s get on with it!” he concluded, signaling his readiness to face new challenges and further elevate Philippine pride in the international sports arena.
Obiena’s performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, while short of a medal, has reaffirmed his status as one of the world’s top pole vaulters and a source of pride for the nation.
