Basketball Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade has revealed that he underwent kidney surgery 13 months ago after doctors discovered a cancerous tumor. The retired NBA star shared his health battle for the first time in the latest episode of his The WY Network podcast on Thursday.
Wade, 43, disclosed that he had 40% of his right kidney removed in December 2023 following a “shocking” diagnosis. He admitted that he had delayed seeking medical attention for years but was prompted to get a check-up after experiencing stomach issues, cramping, and slow urination.
“Why is my stream weak? Why is it not powerful?” Wade recalled questioning during his conversation with co-host Bob Metelus. A full-body scan later revealed a tumor on his kidney, leading multiple doctors to recommend surgery.
Following the procedure, tests confirmed that the tumor was cancerous. Wade did not share further details about his current health but emphasized that the experience reshaped his understanding of family and vulnerability.
“That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life,” Wade said, adding that his family’s support became his source of strength.
The three-time NBA champion has four children and is also the legal guardian of his nephew. He reflected on how his illness brought his family closer together. “In my weakness, I found strength in my family,” he shared.
