Supporters of Vice President Sara Duterte gathered on Roxas Avenue on Sunday for an indignation rally and candle lighting event, expressing their discontent over her impeachment.
Dubbed the “Protect VP Sara” rally, the event drew participants from Davao and nearby provinces, voicing frustration over lawmakers who backed the move against Duterte.
According to an ABS-CBN News report, Deputy Mayor of the Maranao tribe, Randy Usman, led the demonstration, calling the impeachment an act of political persecution. Despite Duterte’s earlier statement discouraging protests, her supporters insisted on making their anger known.
The rally organizers said this would not be their last show of support for the vice president.
Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives last Wednesday, with 215 lawmakers voting in favor of a fourth complaint—far exceeding the 102 votes needed for the case to be sent to the Senate for trial. However, the Senate adjourned its plenary session without taking action, delaying proceedings until June 2.
