Duterte bloc backs Chiz Escudero’s Senate leadership in 20th Congress

The Senate’s so-called “Duter7” bloc, composed of allies of former President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Sara Duterte, has expressed collective support for the continued leadership of Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero in the upcoming 20th Congress.

Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa confirmed the group’s stance during a media forum on July 9, saying, “We have already committed.” While he wasn’t certain if all members had formally signed the resolution, he stated, “I’ve already signed.”

The bloc includes Senators Christopher “Bong” Go, Robin Padilla, Rodante Marcoleta, Imee Marcos, and siblings Mark and Camille Villar, all known Duterte allies. However, when asked about Marcos’ formal support, Dela Rosa admitted he wasn’t sure if she had spoken directly to Escudero.

“In principle, we—the Duterte bloc—have discussed it, and we are inclined to support Chiz Escudero as Senate President,” he added.

Dela Rosa emphasized that no political deals were made in exchange for his support. “I didn’t ask for anything. Nothing was promised to me either,” he said. What drew his support, he explained, was Escudero’s inclusive and open leadership style. “He listens. That’s what we need in a democratic institution—to hear everyone out,” he stressed.
