Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in collaboration with Cruise, a leading self-driving technology firm, has commenced supervised trials of autonomous Chevrolet Bolt vehicles in Jumeirah 1.
This pilot is a fruit of the collaboration between RTA and Cruise and builds upon the successful data collection and testing previously conducted on closed tracks. Notably, Cruise has been providing driverless ride-hailing services in the USA since February 2022. An RTA technical team’s recent visit to San Francisco, wherein they experienced the Cruise rides, fortified RTA’s trust in Cruise’s autonomous technology.
This venture is emblematic of RTA’s strategic goals to be the first in the MENA region to offer autonomous transport, strengthening Dubai’s pioneering status in the area. These efforts dovetail with Dubai’s aspiration to be recognized as the globe’s smartest city. Moreover, they signify RTA’s dedication to enhancing the wellbeing and safety of its residents, tourists, and visitors.
In the broader picture, these initiatives support the Vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to have 25% of Dubai’s journeys be autonomous by 2030.
Cruise’s focus during these trials will be to ensure the safety and performance of their Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) in Dubai, especially assessing their compatibility with the infrastructure of Jumeirah 1. The trials, particularly in the initial stages, will always have a safety driver at the helm.
On a related note, marking a significant milestone, RTA has awarded Cruise the first-ever permit to test AVs on Dubai’s roads.
