Starting August 20, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai will roll out a digital version of its free parking permits for Senior Emiratis and People of Determination. This digital initiative eliminates the need to print and display permits physically.
A noteworthy feature of the smart permit is the ability for users to register up to five vehicles under each permit. However, only one vehicle can be active at a time: one as the primary vehicle and the remaining four as secondary.
Eng. Osama Al-Safi, Director of the Parking, RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, highlighted RTA’s dedication to enhancing customer experience. “RTA aims to increase people’s happiness through this service. Senior Emiratis and People of Determination can now easily access their smart parking permits via RTA’s website, its app, or at customer happiness centres,” he remarked.
The digital permits encompass a variety of services. They allow Senior Emiratis and People of Determination to use public parking for free. However, designated parking spaces for specific categories remain off-limits. The permits cover both permanent and temporary parking for People of Determination, with allowances for special medical conditions and rehabilitation centers.
Customers will be informed about updates to their permits via text notifications. These messages will contain a link to activate the permit electronically. Al-Safi explained, “Users can designate one vehicle for permanent use and add secondary vehicles, which can be activated for up to an hour, with renewal options available online or through RTA’s smart app.” He emphasized that the authorized licensee must be present in the vehicle during its use.
