Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced plans to construct 762 new bus shelters across the city by 2025. This initiative is part of RTA’s continuous efforts to improve public transport services and enhance customer satisfaction.
Mattar Al Tayer, the Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, emphasized the significance of this project in supporting the “My Community… A Place for Everyone” Initiative. Launched by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, this initiative aims to make Dubai a more inclusive and friendly city for People of Determination. In line with this, the new bus shelters will be designed to accommodate the needs of all users, including those with disabilities, featuring wheelchair-accessible areas.
In an innovative approach, RTA is exploring the potential of using 3D printing technology for the construction of some shelters, in collaboration with a specialized company. This trial will assess the viability and benefits of integrating modern construction technologies into public infrastructure.
The bus shelters have been categorized into four tiers based on the daily passenger usage: Main stops (over 750 passengers), Secondary stops (250 to 750 passengers), Primary stops (100 to 250 passengers), and Pick-up/Drop-off stations (up to 100 passengers daily). The main stop shelters will include an air-conditioned section, while all shelters will offer shaded outdoor areas and advertising spaces. To further enhance the passenger experience, these shelters will be equipped with information screens displaying bus routes, schedules, pick-up times, and other relevant services.
