Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is gearing up to build a new 13.5 km track designed for bicycles, scooters, and pedestrians. This initiative aims to transform Dubai into a more bicycle-friendly city, promoting cycling as a sport and a mode of transport.
The track, stretching from Al Sufouh to Dubai Hills along Hessa Street, will include innovative architectural features such as two bridges over Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized the project’s capacity to handle significant traffic flows. “Hessa Street will be widened from two to four lanes in each direction, increasing its capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour both ways,” Al Tayer explained.
Al Tayer detailed the track’s design, stating, “The multi-use track, measuring 13.5 km in length and 4.5 meters in width, will facilitate connectivity between various residential, commercial, and educational districts, enhancing the first and last-mile connectivity.”
The track’s design includes unique features, with bridges engineered to offer scenic views and tranquility, integrating aesthetic elements with functional design. “The bridge over Sheikh Zayed Road incorporates themes of connectivity with its overlapping line structure, while the Al Khail Road bridge design uses the path of the sunlight to create a peaceful escape from street noise,” added Al Tayer.
This project is part of a broader initiative to expand Dubai’s cycling infrastructure to 1,000 km by 2030, linking key communities across the emirate and promoting cycling as a sustainable transport option.
