Dubai to construct 40 new air-conditioned rest areas for delivery workers

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai announced the construction of 40 new air-conditioned rest areas designed to provide delivery riders with a space to recuperate while on duty. This initiative aims to enhance road safety and reduce the likelihood of accidents by offering riders a place to rest in the bustling city.

The rest areas are being built in strategic locations throughout Dubai, offering delivery personnel from companies such as Deliveroo, Noon, and Talabat a reprieve while they wait for their next orders. This measure is part of a broader effort to increase compliance with traffic regulations and improve the working conditions for thousands of riders who navigate the city daily.

Two of the proposed rest areas have already been completed in Al Barsha, and the rest are to be constructed in three phases, with a completion date set for July 2024. Locations such as Arabian Ranches, International City, Business Bay, and others have been identified as key points for these facilities.

The amenities provided in each rest area include snack dispensers, water coolers, and mobile phone charging stations, all designed to accommodate up to 10 people. In addition, ample motorcycle parking will be available adjacent to each facility.

Mattar Al Tayer, the director-general and chairman of RTA, emphasized the importance of these developments. “The construction of these rest areas is part of RTA’s efforts to provide a proper working environment for delivery riders,” he stated, highlighting the rapid growth of the delivery service market in Dubai.

Al Tayer also noted that traffic safety is a top priority, reiterating RTA’s commitment to Dubai’s traffic safety strategy, which seeks to position the city as a global leader in this domain. These rest areas represent a step forward in RTA’s comprehensive plan to improve service quality and professionalize the delivery market, including the certification of delivery riders.
