Dubai’s public transport landscape is set to undergo a significant transformation with the imminent construction of 16 new bus stations and six bus depots. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a series of contracts as part of a comprehensive three-year plan aimed at enhancing public transport services across the city.
The primary objective of this ambitious initiative is to elevate the quality of public transportation services, encouraging residents to choose sustainable modes of travel for their daily commutes. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized the strategic importance of this project in bolstering the city’s transport infrastructure.
Al Tayer highlighted that the project extends beyond conventional station functions, aiming to provide an enhanced travel experience for passengers. The newly constructed stations will offer comprehensive services designed to contribute to passenger happiness, improve accessibility for people with disabilities, provide facilities such as bicycle racks, and ensure seamless connectivity with other modes of transportation including the Dubai Metro and taxi services.
The scope of the project includes the renovation and enhancement of 16 existing bus stations located in key areas such as Deira and Bur Dubai. Additionally, six modern bus depots will be developed to facilitate maintenance and operational requirements. These depots will undergo extensive upgrades including the revamping of inspection and engine wash lanes, as well as improvements to drainage systems and public facilities.
Furthermore, the project will include the construction of residential quarters for drivers, installation of traffic signals, and construction of sidewalks. The initiative also emphasizes the creation of a welcoming environment for all residents, including those with disabilities, with enhancements such as pedestrian crossings, cycling lanes, and other amenities.
The RTA’s efforts to enhance public transport infrastructure align with previous initiatives undertaken to construct modern bus stations across key areas in Dubai. These stations, completed in 2021, were designed to integrate with existing transport networks and provide safe and convenient access for pedestrians and cyclists.
