Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that several major routes, including parts of Sheikh Zayed Road, will gradually close starting 4pm on December 31 to accommodate New Year’s Eve celebrations. Hussain Al Bana, executive director of traffic at the RTA, in a Khaleej Times report, urged residents and visitors to plan ahead and use public transport to avoid delays.
Popular areas like Downtown Dubai and other fireworks show venues are expected to draw large crowds. Al Bana advised those attending these events to start their trips early, while those not participating in the festivities are encouraged to leave the area well in advance. Guests with reservations in Downtown Dubai should arrive before the 4pm road closures.
Key routes, such as Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, Al Mustaqbal Street, and Burj Khalifa Street, will close by 4pm, with additional closures on Financial Centre Street and Al Sukuk Street scheduled for later in the evening. Sheikh Zayed Road will close in phases starting at 11pm.
Dedicated viewing zones with large screens and meal services have been arranged for workers, while family-only viewing areas will be introduced, with details to follow. Approximately 20,000 additional parking spaces have been prepared at Dubai Mall, Zabeel, and Emaar Boulevard. Shuttle services will also be available from alternative parking locations, such as Al Wasl and GDRFA.
Visitors are encouraged to use Metro stations with parking facilities, such as Centerpoint, Etisalat e&, and Jebel Ali. The Dubai Water Canal Footbridge and its elevators will close at 4pm.
Dubai will light up with New Year’s Eve fireworks across 36 locations, including Burj Park, Global Village, Al Seef, Bluewaters, and Dubai Festival City Mall, welcoming 2025 with grand celebrations.
