Dubai is set to revolutionize its aviation sector with plans to construct a mega-airport, surpassing the capabilities of the current world’s busiest airport, Dubai International (DXB). Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, announced this ambitious project at the Dubai Airshow 2023.
The decision comes as DXB’s passenger traffic is expected to hit 86.8 million this year, edging closer to its maximum capacity of 120 million passengers annually. Griffiths highlighted that once this limit is reached, the necessity for a new, larger airport will become inevitable, ideally within the 2030s.
Dubai Airports is currently utilizing innovative technologies and space optimization at DXB to manage up to 100 million passengers, with potential expansion to 120 million. Despite these efforts, the anticipated growth in passenger demand necessitates the development of the new airport, which is planned to be even more expansive and efficient than DXB.
The proposed airport, which is expected to be a part of the Al Maktoum International, is designed to be modular rather than terminal-based. This innovative approach aims to provide a more intimate experience for travelers and eliminate outdated processes, according to Griffiths.
While specific details regarding the new airport’s cost and capacity remain undisclosed, Griffiths emphasized the long-term vision behind this project, extending into the 2050s. The rapid recovery of the aviation industry post-pandemic has been a driving force behind this expansion, as people resume traveling following lockdowns.
